Elminster in Myth Drannor. Despite this setback, Elminster and the rangers, along with their allies, freed High Dale and defeated Manshoon of the Zhentarim. I’ve read a lot of bad and negative reviews about this book here, and though in some cases I can concur or at least see the reason behind those words, it is sad that most of the negativity seemed to be excessive and unfounded, and sometimes even deliberate. Later, while eavesdropping on a possible thieving mark, Elminster met that era’s Magister, the wizard who bore the mantle of Azuth ‘s power.
I’ve read far-worse written books about characters I love and care about deeply, following them through 10 of a series and watched as the author got bored of the writing.
The Genie’s Curse Birthright: I got about half way and then skimmed the rest. Instead of unleashing her wrath upon the upstart youth, she questions him, and based upon his wise and honest answers and his exceptional potential, Mystra instructs Elminster in the ways of magic and he becomes a powerful cleric and mage, one of her Chosen, a title rarely given and accompanied by a host of powers and duties.

Personally I think it is the second answer since Greenwood can pretty much get away with writing rubbish. Imagine two epic level wizards duking it out in your region. Follows Elminster as he starts on his path to being the greatest mage in the whole Forgotten Realms, and that is where it lets itself down.

Elminster: The Making of a Mage
After a terrific battle, Elminster persevered and assumed the throne of Athalantar. Like his onetime apprentice Vangerdahast, this ancient wizard is finally starting to seem truly old, prone to long reveries in which he sees again people and places now long vanished.

Dark Sun Dark Sun: Play still continues in this long-running campaign, and Ed also keeps busy producing Realmslore for various TSR publications. Following the events of the Spellplague caused by the destruction of his patron, Mystra, Elminster lost much of his power but remained unaging.
